Howard Public Library Origin

On January 8, 1886, pioneer women in this
five year old town established the Ladies
Library Association of Howard. They received “Charter No.1” as the first recognized library
in Dakota Territory. The library was in a corner
of Boles General Store where the librarian opened the bookcase for a couple of hours
two days a week.

In 1974, after 74 years of service the
old Howard Library building was moved to Historic Prairie Village for display.
